Imperfectly Perfect
Detroit Tigers pitcher Galarraga was on his way to a perfect game
with 26 of the 27 outs when umpire Jim Joyce blew the last call
(badly I might add) to rob Galarraga of what would have been only
the 21st perfect game in major league history.
I would have lost it...really lost it. I would have sworn, thrown things, you name it. What did Galarraga do? He smiled in disbelief and then calmly finished the game.
After wards, Joyce said he'd blown the call and "cost that kid a perfect game." Galarraga had every right to tear Joyce apart, but instead he had sympathy for the umpire and said he felt worse for him than he did for himself.
I didn't know anything about Galarraga before this incident, but the whole thing made me very proud of him. In an era when professional athletes often come across as spoiled and arrogant, Galarraga did and said things most wouldn't have.
He lost his chance at the perfect game but he will go down in baseball history for the way he handled it, so hey, Y'nevano.
